I hope you had a safe trip and those old clansmen who are now socialists and fanciest are known to do that to us on the DARK SIDE. Wish I was here to correct my dyslexic errors in the pages but I am advised to avoid most normal neck turns, twists and bends required for me to see the screen and type at the same time. I have been fitted with a neck brace which feels like it is trying to add 3 inches to the length of my neck. It took 6 hours to remove of C5 and the clean up of C4 and C6 to remove some serious stenosis. Now, by the grace of God and the skill He gave to my surgeon I am still alive and as ornery as usual. All the hospital and rehabilitation nurses can attest to my stubborn determination to get home as soon as possible and my very dry humor. I am a simple systems engineer but some of the things I had to correct in my almost flawless care were serious errors I hope they learned something from my comments.

Albert Einstein is reported to have said: "Everything must be made as simple as possible, but not one bit simpler."I see a truth in this that I can only describe as with programming is when I or a colleague writes a piece of real time code in an extremely short precise form that is elegant when it does what it is supposed to do and need not do anything else. Elegant is simple and yet it a person removes one more instruction and it still performs its mission the parent program is no longer simple or elegant and the child is. The code used in the original Apollo LEM computer to take the men from the orbiting return vehicle to the moon's surface and return them to the return vehicle was elegant. There was only so much memory and so it had to be elegant.

To or three years later the HP rep. came in and told us not to worry any more they had enough memory for us to be as sloppy as we wanted. That seemed to work for most but real time programmers still like elegant code. It is easier to add up the micro-seconds a routine takes. And what happened to elegance: My Windows 10's Windows directory has 103,891 files totaling 4.7 GB. The first time I used a pc for work it caner with windows 3 and took up MB of hard disk space. That was my system of choice for running the cross-compilers I used for the various controllers available at that time. I actually had to bring my own machine into work as most everything was done on the big central fill the room ones. I found this very slow and could do a thousand or more lines of code a day and that was my generating the flow chart for what I was designing, typing the code into the PC running in an on board emulator until the thing did what I wanted and putting my new module into the data entry people punch the cards for the big corporate system. No one knew the power I say in that little 8080 processor. The acceptable for the poor systems engineer to find out if his package worked was getting out 100 lines of code a day because they had to do the flowchart, hand it to the coder who gave it to the key punch department and then the people who fed these card into the bid room filler and got a yes or no back to the engineer who did the flowchart. who would if it did not perform co over the output for coder errors and key punch errors correct then correct the flowchart if faulty, or have the coder fix the error or the key puncher fix the error if it was there. It was a lot of people for what my little Tandy machine would do ten times faster. With a few comment to supervisors that the surrounding were noisy and slowing me down the told me to go home and do the non classified parts till I had my wife, my house and me get a new facility clearance.

I bring all this up because it is this up because it is the same in local, state and national government. There are so many people it involved in getting something done no one incompetent person would never be found responsible for a delay. Put ten let me change it to inexperienced people and the project slows by a factor of 100 not the ten you would think and you will probably never find the incompetent ones due to the complexity the size of the project has. I would never say it needed that size. The size is just what any bureaucrat with no engineering experience decided was the size needed to justify their management of the job and the remuneration they receive for a manager of that size project.

So back to the Einstein's supposed quote: somewhere there is a perfect balance of tall ant and staff requirements to have efficiency and performance. That is as simple as it gets. More staff is just a simpler solution. On one of my old web pages I put my quote, "Experience in any job produces a quality outcome under schedule and lowers cost. Overtime reduces efficiency, increases cost and time to completion."

It used to be said about computers: "Put garbage in, get garbage out," For me its "Put dyslexic in and get dyslexic out. The programming is easy. It never lets me make a mistake. It stops immediately and will not do another thing until I correct my programming error. It ain't that way with spelling or grammar for a dyslexic person My spellchecker either puts in the wrong word or I pick the wrong meaning from the list of choices.
